The Morning Report sports presenter received the Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony in Auckland on Thursday night.
Garry Ahern has been in the role at Radio New Zealand since 1997.
At the award ceremony, he was described as the consummate broadcasting journalist who asks the right questions, gets the information and presents it knowledgably and in an entertaining fashion.
He has also reported from many Olympic and Commonwealth Games, starting in Los Angeles in 1984.
The award citation said his love for golf and ability to report on the nuances of the game has seen him attend just about every New Zealand Golf Open and major professional tournament in the country through the last 40 years.
