Hamilton council to vote on fluoride

9:25 pm on 26 November 2013

The Hamilton City Council has said that it will decide whether to put fluoride back into the water supply.

The council removed it in July this year after holding a two-day hearing, but not long after that decided to put it to a referendum.

The vote, held in conjunction with the local elections, saw 70% of voters opt in favour of fluoridation.

The result is not binding and the new council is expected to vote on the issue at its first formal meeting on 28 November.

Hamilton mayor Julie Hardaker and the majority of her councillors have indicated that they will support the referendum result.
