Police in Palmerston North are continuing an investigation after a man was shot in the leg late on Monday evening.
They say the 50-year-old man was shot after he had gone outside his house in Highbury to investigate what he said was movement by his vehicle.
An argument broke out with another man and he was shot.
Police say the Armed Offenders Squad was called in and while both men are known to each other, the shooter was not found.
The victim is in Palmerston North Hospital for surgery and police say it is unclear if the incident is gang related.
The weapon used has not been recovered but is believed to have been a shotgun.
