The latest addition to the New Zealand Cycle Trail has been opened.
The 136-kilometre-long West Coast Wilderness Trail traverses rainforest, glacial rivers and lakes and wetlands between Greymouth in the north and Ross in the south.
Three quarters of the $7.9 million trail was to be officially opened at a ceremony in Kumara on Saturday afternoon as part of an all-day celebration. The final stage from Hokitika to Ross is expected to be completed next year.
Westland mayor Mike Havill said it was an exciting addition to the tourist infrastructure of the West Coast.
He said it will play a critical role attracting domestic and international visitors to the area for many years to come.
