Police have named the teenager who died after being struck by a car in Rangiora, North Canterbury.
He was 17-year-old Joshua Jamie Gardiner of Woodend, who was hit by the car on Boys Road, just outside Rangiora about 3.30am on Thursday.
Police say Mr Gardiner had been socialising with friends in Rangiora on Wednesday evening and later travelled by bicycle towards Woodend.
Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston said the teenager abandoned the bike and it appears he fell asleep on the road about 400 metres away. Mr Johnston says alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
