Historic trams in Christchurch resume operations

9:53 am on 21 November 2013

Christchurch's historic trams are officially resuming operating in the central city on Thursday, for the first time since the February 2011 earthquake.

Tour company Welcome Aboard said major repairs have been done to the 2.6 kilometre tram tracks that looped through the city, as well as overhead wiring and cables.

Managing director Michael Esposito said the vehicles would run on a shortened route from New Regent Street, across Cathedral Square, and down to Canterbury Museum.

Reduced fares were being offered because of the shorter trip.

Mr Esposito said the trams would return to service in three stages, with each extending the loop.

Stages two and three were scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.
