Hamilton police are investigating a series of events on Sunday that left a man injured after he was struck down and run over by a car driven by his partner.

The woman then drove over a 10-metre bank into the Waikato River and was rescued by the police and passersby.

The car has been removed from the river for testing.

The 43-year-old man is in Waikato Hospital with serious injuries and the woman, 44, is currently under mental health care at the hospital.

A spokesperson for the man's family said relatives wanted to acknowledge the courage and kindness shown by people during what they said was a tragic incident.

Police want to hear from any further witnesses to the incident on the corner of Ohaupo Road and Normandy Avenue, or when the vehicle went into the river.

The car was lifted from the river on Monday and was examined by forensics on Tuesday.
