Mayor hopes for river tourism spinoff

4:04 pm on 17 November 2013

The mayor of Kawerau says he is hopeful the Bay of Plenty town's hosting of some events in the World White Water Rafting Championships will lead to a positive tourism spinoff.

The championships are underway and events are taking place on rivers in and around Kawerau, Murupara and Rotorua.

Kawerau mayor Malcolm Campbell says the Tarawera River may be opened up for tourism opportunities such as adventure sports.

He says what is in Kawerau has to be sold to the rest of the world.

The World White Water Rafting Championships are scheduled to run until next Sunday.
