Police look for quiet end to Show Week

9:40 am on 16 November 2013

Racegoers in Christchurch are being asked to celebrate responsibly on Saturday as Cup and Show Week draws to an end.

Inspector Peter Cooper says Saturday is usually a demanding day for the police, combining normal weekend activity with a major public event.

Last year, the police fielded 390 calls on the Saturday, up from the previous year's 308 but still well below 2009 and 2010 levels.

A total of 304 offences were recorded last year; well up on the 190 the previous year, largely because of the enforcement of liquor bans.

Police will patrol Riccarton Park and surrounding suburbs throughout the day. Patrols in other popular entertainment precincts will be boosted from mid-afternoon.
