A Chinese developer is the new owner of Northland's top-end Carrington Resort.

Shanghai CRED Real Estate has purchased the 1000-hectare resort on the Karikari peninsula from its American owner Paul Kelly.

The sale has been approved by the Overseas Investment Office after hearing that the company - one of Shanghai's largest developers - will invest millions of dollars into Peppers Carrington, as it will now be known as.

New Zealander Simon Jones, who's been with the resort for six years, has been appointed chief executive officer.

He says Shanghai CRED plans to promote the resort and golf course to high-income Chinese tourists and expand the accommodation and vineyard.

Mr Jones says all 40 staff at Peppers Carrington have been offered continued employment.

He says the new owners will care for wetlands, and archaeological sites, according to protocols with local iwi and councils and will continue to provide public access to the beach.
