The father of surfing's newest junior world champion says the win is like a fairytale come true.

Ella Williams, 18, from Whangamata, has won the Women's Association of Surfing Professional World Junior Title in Florianapolis in Brazil.

She entered the competition as a late alternative and was told she was going only two weeks ago.

Her father, Dean Williams, says it was a dream for Ella to have even been at the competition, let alone win it.

He says her performance in the competition was outstanding.

"We were just over the moon, we just couldn't believe that, you know, from start to finish she won everything and she went through the pack and cleaned out the lot, all the world tour surfers, she beat everybody."

Mr Williams says he did not sleep at all on Saturday night, staying up to watch every heat of the competition.

He says his daughter has made New Zealand surfing history and her whole world will open up.

Mr Williams says she will now be invited into every six star event, helping her to eventually make the world tour.
