The Automobile Association is calling for wheel clamping fees to be dramatically reduced as the Government reviews a voluntary code of conduct for clamping.
The code of conduct was drawn up last year and signed by five private companies, which agree not to charge more than $200 to clamp a vehicle.
Consumer Affairs Minister Craig Foss says he will consider expanding the code to cover enforcement methods and to push for an industry wide code.
However, the Automobile Association says the code as it stands is toothless and it wants it made mandatory.
AA principal advisor Mark Stockdale says the $200 fee is excessive, and the AA supports a Labour Party move to reduce it to just $50.
Mr Foss says he will take into account the views of all those involved in the industry as part of the review.
