The Frenchman, who is a New Zealand resident, was dropped off at Karamea Bluffs, north of Westport, on 18 October. He was was due to be collected by a friend on 21 October, but never showed up.

Searches involving dog teams and a helicopter failed to find Mr Simon and the search was suspended.

Sergeant Sean Judd says Mr Simon made his own way out of the bush but then chose to go back in again, without letting his friends know.

Mr Judd says his lack of communication with others, despite the opportunity to do so, could lead to possible charges for wasting police time.

He says he will be speaking to Mr Simon on Friday afternoon.
