Canterbury road toll higher than last year's

The number of deaths on Canterbury roads this year has already outstripped the number of road deaths in the region for the whole of last year.

The Transport Agency says speed, alcohol and intersections have been factors in the 35 deaths on the region's roads since January. Thirty-three people died in 2012.

The agency's southern director, Jim Harland, says people in Canterbury have been through three difficult years and with many of the roads still in poor condition, greater care needs to be taken, particularly around cyclists and pedestrians.

Christchurch police reported on Tuesday morning that four of the eight cyclist deaths on New Zealand roads this year occurred in Canterbury.
