A man has been arrested over the bashing of a Buddhist monk in south Auckland.

The police say the 58-year-old Vietnamese monk was hit with a baseball bat, handcuffed and stomped on in his monastery in Bombay in August.

He received a serious head wound and several fractures in what the police called a vicious and unprovoked attack.

Counties Manukau police have arrested and charged a 52-year old Papakura man with aggravated robbery.

He is to appear in the Papakura District Court on 17 October.

Two other people are still being sought.
