Trial starts in careless driving case

8:52 pm on 7 October 2013

A defended hearing has started in the Wellington District Court for a man accused of careless driving following a crash in June last year.

Bililigne Gebretsadik, 41, may also face further charges including one relating to the death of his unborn child following an emergency caesarean after the crash.

The woman driving the other car involved in the crash, Sheronika Singh, told the court on Monday as she passed through a green light while driving towards the Basin Reserve, she heard a loud crunching sound and her car began to drift sideways.

She said a car had come from a street on the left and hit her vehicle on the front passenger's side.

Ms Singh said she applied the brakes and pulled on the handbrake in an effort to stabilise her car.

She was shown several photos of the scene, along with part of a recorded police interview.

In cross-examination, she admitted she had told the police officer during the interview she could not be sure exactly which of the traffic lights at the intersection she was looking at when she saw a green signal allowing her to proceed.

The hearing is set down for three days but will consider only whether Mr Gebretsardik's driving was careless.

If that charge is proven a further hearing will take place to consider whether his unborn child died as a result of the crash, or some other cause.
