A six metre wooden sculpture, based on seismic waveforms recorded during the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011, was burned to the ground on Saturday night.
Hundreds of people were at the Motokara racecourse on the Canterbury Plains to watch the Temple of Christchurch go up in flames.
Artist Hippathy Valentine said people were able to write anything they wished to let go on the walls of the sculpture in the past few weeks.
As the sculpture burned, he said many people felt a moment of release, which was the purpose of the work.
