Police test new alcohol screening device

2:27 pm on 18 September 2013

Police are about to start trailing new breath screening devices which will provide more detailed information than the current ones.

Representatives from police appeared before the Law and Order Select Committee on Wednesday to discuss an Auditor General's report on drink driving.

Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Dave Cliff says overall drink driving numbers are dropping.

He told MPs the breath testing devices the police currently use just show whether a driver has passed or failed a breath test, and the new ones are far more advanced.

Mr Cliff says about 100 of the testing devices will be rolled out over the next few months.
