Prisoners deny involvement in riot

6:32 pm on 17 September 2013

Half the inmates the police say were responsible for a 10-hour riot at a Waikato prison have denied involvement.

Twenty-three defendants are appearing in the Auckland District Court on charges relating to the 10-hour riot at the Waikato prison in June. Almost half of them have pleaded not guilty.

Police have laid more than 40 charges, which include damaging property by fire knowing a danger to life was likely, rioting, assault and injuring with intent.

The most serious charge, of damage by fire, carries a maximum 14-year prison term.

The 30-strong police witness list remains suppressed due to fears of retribution, and arguments against that suppression will be heard on 21 October.

The high number of not guilty pleas has raised questions over where the trial will be held, with one option being Auckland Prison at Paremoremo.

A decision will be made after the rest of the inmates enter their pleas on 16 October.
