Bar-tailed Godwits have begun arriving in Christchurch.
Hundreds of Godwits return about this time every year after a journey of 11,000km.
They have flown from Alaska to escape the winter and feed at the Avon-Heathcote estuary.
The Godwits will double in weight before making their return journey to Alaska early next year.
