Police have finally tracked down the man wanted in connection with the kidnapping of a toddler in Auckland nearly two months ago.

Phillip Edwards, 33, had been on the run since the child was taken from his Panmure home on 11 August.

The toddler was found eight hours later.

Police say Mr Edwards was caught by police in Blockhouse Bay with an associate about 3am on Tuesday when officers noticed a stolen vehicle connected to Mr Edwards outside the property.

He appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday afternoon charged with kidnapping and was remanded into custody.

The police say he also faces charges of assaulting a woman and stealing a car. His associate will be charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Mr Edwards will reappear in court next week.
