A snapshot into what Tauranga looked like in the 1860s has been revealed with the discovery of a cellar during demolition work in the city centre.

The cellar dates from when the first hotel on the site was built, and is one of three uncovered during the work taking place at 41 The Strand.

The site is being investigated and recorded.

Historic Places Trust regional archaeologist Rachel Darmody said Tauranga is a hot spot for archaeology and the site incorporates a lot of history.
