Facebook information requests 'reasonable' - Netsafe

9:52 pm on 29 August 2013

Netsafe says it is reasonable for the Government to ask Facebook for users' personal information in certain circumstances.

Government agencies in New Zealand made 106 requests for information on 119 Facebook users in the first half of this year.

But the social-networking company rejected four out of every 10 requests.

Netsafe says the number of requests can only continue to rise, as Facebook holds a tremendous amount of valuable information.

Director Martin Cocker says people who are shocked by government agencies seeking information from Facebook, which is essentially a public space, are being naive.

However, the Green Party says it is an example of the Government spying on New Zealanders.
