The Northland town of Kerikeri is to have its own public sewerage system - after years of debate and what the mayor calls 'dithering'.
The Far North Council has voted to go ahead with the project after a publicity campaign last month - featuring talking long-drops in the main street.
Kerikeri has a small sewerage scheme, but most newer homes have individual aerated-treatment plants which are failing to cope with the town's wastewater.
Mayor Wayne Brown says nearly two-thirds of submitters want reticulated sewage and the council will begin planning now, to take advantage of a 27% Ministry of Health subsidy.
Mr Brown says the council will help develop a second-hand market for people's old aerated systems, so they can recoup some of the expense of installing them.
