A man has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison after accidentally shooting his cousin while playing with a gun.

Percy Salega Fepuleai, 31, earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday.

He admitted shooting his cousin Alex Mark Ulu, 23, outside his home at Flatbush in January. Mr Ulu died two weeks later.

Justice Courtney said Fepuleai and Mr Ulu were like brothers but the shooting had torn the family in two.

She said she believed Fepuleai had learned a terrible lesson from the shooting.

Another man, Gareth Heron, was sentenced in June to 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to being an accessory to the manslaughter and to possession of a sawn off .22 calibre gun and ammunition.
