New Plymouth is vying to become the first New Zealand city to join a network of nine other 'surf cities' around the world.
The city of Donostia-San Sebastian in Spain set up the network of world surf cities in 2011 as a way to promote surf tourism with cities known for good quality waves.
Taranaki Surfing says it has been invited to join the network.
Chief executive Craig Williamson said the city needs to grab the title first, before others - such as Gisborne or Mount Maunganui.
New Plymouth District Council has agreed to pay the $1000 entry fee to join and will investigate the concept.
New Plymouth has hosted the women's world pro surfing tour since 2010.
