The body of one of the two New Zealanders killed in a light plane crash in South Africa could be returned home this week.

Richard Primrose was flying with John Walton in a Cessna 182 on Thursday when the plane crashed in mountainous terrain in the east of the country.

A spokesperson for Mr Primrose's family, Brett Titchmarsh, says the authorities in South Africa are keeping them informed.

He says an autopsy is expected to be carried out on Monday and the family then hopes to have the body returned home.

Mr Primrose, who helped organise several safari trips in South Africa, is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Mr Walton's family says he was a well-known and larger-than-life figure.

They say he spent 30 years in the Pacific region and returned to Auckland from Tonga last year to retire.

The family says his love for flying, travel and adventure was surpassed only by his commitment to his family and friends.
