A man who went missing in bush near Whangamata on the Coromandel Peninsula on Friday has been found by a search and rescue team.

Police say the man had been checking possum traps in Wentworth Valley, about 6km from Whangamata, on Friday afternoon but did not return to his car.

A search was started about 11pm and the man was found at 2am on Saturday.

He was suffering from hypothermia and it took the search and rescue team two hours to carry him out of the bush on a stretcher.

Police had said earlier that the man had a medical condition and was not equipped for a night in the bush.
