New e-waste project for Wellington

3:23 pm on 15 August 2013

A new technological cleanup service in Wellington will become the first in the country to allow residents to drop off almost all types of electronic waste, free of charge.

All electronic items, except televisions, will be taken by the Wellington City Council's new service provided by the recycling company RemarkIT.

However, founder of the eDay project that took old computers for free once a year, Laurence Zwimpfer, says there is a better solution to e-waste.

He wants the Government to implement a scheme known as product stewardship, where manufacturers bear the cost of cleaning up their products.

The Community Recycling Network agrees with Mr Zwimpfer; it says such a scheme would mean all electronic waste would be covered.
