Gabriel Witehira-Donnelly was taken from his home in the suburb of Panmure about 12.15pm on Sunday. The two-year-old was found in a shed near his Coates Crescent home alone, crying and cold about 8pm and reunited with his mother.
Police are continuing their search for Phillip Layton Edwards, 33, whom they believe is responsible for the abduction.
He was last seen wearing a dark blue hoodie, black jeans and Nike shoes. Police said he is not a relative, but knows the boy's family.
Edwards was released from prison last year, after serving almost nine years for manslaughter.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard said on Monday if anyone is tempted to assist him, they should seriously consider the implications. He has connections around Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Northland.
Police have asked Panmure residents to check their sheds for abandoned clothes or any sign of someone sleeping rough and to contact them immdiately.
