A court has heard different versions of what the woman accused of killing her godson told family members while the one-year-old was in hospital.
Mariam Filihia is on trial at the High Court in Auckland charged with causing grievous bodily harm and murdering Terepo Taura-Griffiths, known as Popo, in November 2011.
The Crown's case is that Mrs Filihia struck the boy's head against a hard surface. He died in Starship hospital two days later.
On Tuesday, the court heard evidence from two cousins of the accused and two of Popo's great aunts.
All spoke to Mrs Filihia after the boy was taken to hospital and were given her version of events. The stories from each of the witnesses varied.
The court was told that Mrs Filihia told her cousin, Ofa Kakala, that Popo was putting his shoes on when he slipped and fell, hitting his head on a mirror.
Ms Kakala said when she visited Terepo in Starship hospital, Mrs Filihia was very distressed, crying and didn't want to speak to anyone.
Another cousin, Ileana Kakala, said the accused told her the boy had a seizure and fell and hit his head.
