Auckland Council says work will begin within two days on a central Auckland apartment building where cracks were discovered.
About 50 people were evacuated from the Prince Albert apartments on Albert Street on Wednesday after private engineers expressed concern to the council about the heritage building's structural integrity.
Council engineers found concrete broken away and corroding steel on the building's columns and forced residents to leave immediately.
A council spokesperson said on Thursday that a plan has been put together and work would start on Saturday.
Residents have to find alternative accommodation until the remedial work is completed by next Wednesday.
A resident of the building and member of the body corporate, Kathy Ross, said the council is overreacting and trying to cover its back in case of an earthquake similar to those in Christchurch.
Ms Ross believed the repair work is likely to cost tens of thousands of dollars.
