No concerns held about GE soybean products

Food Standards Australia New Zealand says it has no safety concerns about products manufactured using a genetically engineered soybean.

The agency is considering an application from Bayer CropScience, and Syngenta Seeds, to allow the production of food derived from a soybean, genetically modified to be tolerant to the herbicides glufosinate-ammonium and mesotrione.

Chief executive Steve McCutcheon said a safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns, and food containing the soybean is as safe as food derived from conventional soybeans.

Public submissions close on 23 August.
