Breakaway union accepts NZ Bus offer

One of the unions representing Auckland bus drivers has decided to take up a pay offer from their employer after breaking ranks to end a standoff.

The National Distribution Union members have voted to withdraw from the Auckland Combined Unions and have approached their employer NZ Bus to sign a deal.

Earlier this week combined union members voted against the pay offer of 11.5% over three years, following industrial action in October that caused disruption for tens of thousands of commuters.

But the National Distribution Union says the agreement is the best members can get, although there is still inherently low pay in the industry.

NDU transport secretary Karl Andersen says similar discussion are being held in two of the three other unions which may end up joining renewed discussions with NZ Bus.

He says the offer was turned down at Wednesday's meeting because the largest union urged its rejection.

NZ Bus says it is pleased some staff have decided to take up its latest pay offer.
