Home testing gender kits proving popular

The distributor of an over-the-counter kit which can reveal the gender of a foetus early in pregnancy says the product is proving very popular in New Zealand.

The home testing product was launched last Monday. Australian-based distributor Early Image says about 2000 test kits have been sold since then.

Managing director David Portnoy says the test is about 90% accurate.

Some anti-abortion groups are concerned that availability of the test kit will lead to more women terminating pregnancies on gender grounds.

But Mr Portnoy says the kit is already sold in the United States and Australia, and neither country has recorded an increase in abortion statistics.
