A student magazine has called off a car race named after a convicted double-murderer.
The Lundy 500, was supposed to mirror the high speed journey Mark Lundy made between Petone and Palmerston North to kill his wife and daughter in August 2000.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non parole period of 20 years for the crime.
The race, which was intended to draw attention to inconsistencies in New Zealand's justice system, was met with widespread disapproval.
The editor of Victoria University's student magazine Salient, Jackson Wood, says he received emails from the Lundy family on Sunday urging him to abandon the event.
He says he has agreed to do so and says he never intended to offend them.
