Zion wildlife park allowed to reopen

Whangarei's Zion wildlife park is back in business, and the staff feel as though a weight's been lifted from their shoulders.

Park spokesperson Sara Reid says they're all delighted by the decision. Zion Wildlife Gardens was shut down last month after big-cat handler Dalu Mncube was killed by a tiger while cleaning out the animal's cage.

Now two government agencies have given Zion the green light to reopen on Saturday.

The Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry and the Department of Labour say the park has worked hard to ensure that it complies with legal requirements.

Ms Reid says improvements have been made to some enclosures so that keepers can separate themselves from the animals.
