One person has died and two others are seriously injured after a crash on State Highway 1 in South Canterbury.
A police spokesperson says a four-wheel drive and a truck collided at Otaio, 20 kilometres south of Timaru on Sunday afternoon.
The truck veered off the road after the collision, crashed into a power pole and ended up in a ditch.
Police say they think the rear tyres burst into flames as a result of the friction on the road.
The driver of the car died, and has not yet been identified.
Police say the two passengers of the car are seriously hurt.
