Closure of community police station in Otara opposed

9:02 am on 26 June 2013

Residents in Otara, Auckland, are fighting the closure of their community police station.

Both the Otara and Papatoetoe stations are to close and officers will shift to newly-renovated larger stations in Otahuhu and Flatbush (Ormiston Rd station).

In a statement, police said now these stations are fully operational and it has been decided, after a process of community engagement, that the two smaller stations are surplus to requirements.

But Ross Robertson MP says many people in the community don't have cars. A petition with hundreds of signatures has been forwarded to the minister of police.
