Dogs stolen 'regularly' from pounds

A dog control specialist says dogs are stolen regularly from pounds due to a lack of security and because owners disregard the law.

Three dogs were stolen from the Greymouth pound in the past two weeks. Two were on 'death row' after viciously attacking people.

Barry Gillingwater, who has had dog control contracts with the Wellington City Council and Manukau City Council, says many of the animals are taken by owners from pounds because they think they are above the law.

Mr Gillingwater says the money invested by councils to ensure pounds are secure varies and once a dog has been taken, it is very hard to get it back.
