A new method of building earthquake-strengthened bridges could be rolled out in New Zealand by the end of next year.
The Accelerated Bridge Construction method has been developed by University of Canterbury researchers and builds bridges offsite.
The university's Alessandro Palermo says that improves earthquake resilience, speeds up construction time and reduces traffic disruption.
Dr Palermo says earthquake testing began in July 2011 following the devastating February quake and should be completed by the middle of 2014.
He says construction companies involved in the Christchurch rebuild have shown an interest in using the method.
The research received $600, 000 of funding from the Ministry for Science and Innovation.
