Teen rugby player's death investigated

Police have begun a homicide inquiry into the death of 15-year-old boy after an assault during rugby training in west Auckland.

The Kelston Boys student was taken to hospital in a critical condition about 5.30pm on Thursday, but later died of his injuries.

Detective Inspector Bruce Scott said the boy was training with his team on the field at the nearby girls' college when the assault happened and policed were called to the scene after he collapsed.

Mr Scott said it is not clear at this stage how the boy was assaulted, but he doesn't believe that weapons were involved.

Officers are interviewing all players in the team and other witnesses to the attack.
