The Government is looking at using mobile technology to alert the public in the event of a tsunami.
One method being considered is sending all mobile phones in one area the same message.
Though it appears as a text, it is transmitted like a radio broadcast, so it reaches more people at once.
Ministry of Civil Defence operations manager David Coetzee says it could take time to implement, as mobile phones in New Zealand are not yet enabled for such messaging.
The Papamoa Progressive Association in Bay of Plenty, which has been campaigning for action on tsunami sirens, says coverage would be a problem for some.
Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye says more information on the investigation into alert systems will be available in three months' time.
