The official holiday road toll period closed at 6am on Tuesday with no reported road deaths.

The last fatality-free holiday weekend on New Zealand roads was Easter 2012. During Queen's Birthday last year, there were four fatal crashes resulting in seven deaths.

Assistant Commissioner Dave Cliff said there were several crashes and police are in the process of confirming how many people were injured as a result.

He said about 100 people are usually injured on a Queens Birthday weekend, up to 20 of those seriously.
