Police have charged a 26-year-old man with kidnapping after a woman was dragged by a car along a highway on Saturday.
They say the woman faces several months in hospital after being dragged up to 1700 metres along State Highway One at Lichfield north of Tokoroa.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner says the 37-year-old mother of three suffered multiple fractures and severe grazing to her entire body, and remains in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital.
He says the police hope to speak to her by the end of the week.
Mr Turner says she and the alleged kidnapper were friends and police are satisfied no one else was involved.
Police say they're relying on the public to help them piece together how the incident happened, and they'd like to speak to anyone who saw a dark-coloured Subaru sedan travelling between Rotorua and Putaruru on Saturday some time between late morning and early afternoon.
The arrested man will appear in the Rotorua District Court on Monday and Mr Turner says he may face further charges.
