Auckland Council is close to finalising a smoking ban in parks and other public spaces.
Feedback is being sought from communities through their local boards about the policy, before a committee decides next month whether to approve it.
The ban would take effect in all parks, playgrounds and other outdoor facilities in September, extending to bus stops in 2015, and to spaces such as beaches and civic squares in 2018.
Cr Sandra Coney said the council will rely on social pressure from members of the public, rather than regulation, to enforce the ban.
