Stun gun importer fined

A man who brought an illegal stun gun into Auckland, which almost stunned a Customs officer during an airport search, has been convicted and fined $400.

One of the three guns, disguised as torches, was activated by an officer while searching Michael Visser at Auckland international airport last year.

Manukau District Court heard on Thursday that Visser, 55, told the officer he did not know the items he bought at a market stall in Thailand were stun guns, despite Customs also discovering a manual in his baggage.

Customs says while the guns are easily accessible overseas, they are illegal in New Zealand.
