An organisation providing food for children in low decile schools says the cost of feeding every needy child could reach $10 million a year.

The Education Amendment (Breakfast and Lunch Programmes in Schools) Bill, dubbed the 'Feed the Kids Bill', supports a national programme for fully state-funded food in all low decile schools.

KidsCan is a charity organisation that provides food for (6100) children in 330 low decile schools around the country each day.

Chief executive and co-founder Julie Chapman says the number of children needing to be fed is actually much higher at about 34,000.

Ms Chapman says providing food for that many children could reach several million a year.
