Seventeen projects commemorating 100 years since the beginning of World War I have received $1.7 million in funding from the Lottery Grants Board.
Internal Affairs Minister Chris Tremain said $500,000 has been given to Massey University for a three-volume history of New Zealand and the war.
Mr Tremain said the rest of the money, about $1.2 million, has gone to community projects including a mobile exhibition by Tauranga City Council and preservation of memorial oaks in the Waitaki district.
The grants are the first from a $10 million fund for commemorative projects of national significance and $7 million destined for community projects and events.
