Houses damaged as small tornado hits Raglan

A small tornado has brought down a tree and damaged properties in Raglan.

As it ripped through the Waikato town on Sunday the tornado toppled a tree onto a car, knocked down a chimney and flung a barbecue onto a roof.

The Fire Service was called about 11.50am to the three incidents at Taipari Avenue and Nihinihi Avenue.

Local police officer Jeremy Holmes said debris and rubbish bins were strewn in the streets in the aftermath of the storm.

He said there are no reports of injuries, and the wild weather had since moved east towards Hamilton.

MetService says it's possible there could be more tornadoes on Sunday evening as heavy rain continues in parts of the North Island.

Forecaster John Law says there could also be flash flooding, like that which has already hit Mount Maunganui, Tauranga and Waihi.
